White Diamond / Show Girl Homecoming [DVD] [2007]

White Diamond / Show Girl Homecoming [DVD] [2007]

This double bill of Kylie-related goodness features a candid, feature-length documentary and an electrifying concert. WHITE DIAMOND directed by Minogue's ling-time friend, WilliamBaker documents the star on tour and reveals a unique insight into one of the world's best-loved divas.

HOMECOMING is a concert featuring many of the singer's most popular songs. Tracks include: 'On A Night Like This', 'SpinningAround', 'Confide In Me', 'Kids' (featuring Bono), 'the Locomotion', 'I should Be So Lucky', 'Hand On Your Heart', 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' and 'Especially For You'.

Showgirl celebrates - and keeps her dignity intact5
It's not clear whether the show or the warts-and-all documentary is the main draw for this release. The two-hour show itself is fantastic - filmed on a single night at Melbourne's Rod Laver arena in front of an ecstatic hometown crowd, it showcases a plainly radiant performer who sounds and looks much happier and healthier than she did on the 2005 live DVD, which was filmed at London's Earl's Court just before her diagnosis. Although some dates on the new tour had to be cancelled when Minogue went down with a nasty throat bug, her voice too is generally much improved here - stronger and less nasal than it was before her illness. The contrast is made plain from the disc's extra features, which include re-edited versions of some of the Earl's Court songs ("In Denial", "Your Disco Needs You") which have been dropped from the new version of the show.

The accompanying "White Diamond" documentary is a personal portrait of the singer by her stylist/director/"gay husband" William Baker. Unlike David Furnish's portrait of his partner Elton John "Tantrums and Tiaras", or the infamous "In Bed With Madonna", it's not a controversial exposé - more an affectionate look at the rigours of touring and the ups and downs of being a working creative. There's not much of on/off lover Olivier Martinez, but there's a glimpse of Bono's guest appearance at the Sydney show, some great backstage banter and a moving sequence with sister Dannii. We don't learn much about Kylie that we didn't already know, but the film is always watchable and she does emerge with her dignity - and much of her privacy - deservedly intact.

X Factor - - The Greatest Auditions Ever [DVD]

A compilation of the greatest X Factor auditions including the comments from the panel: Simon, Louis and Sharon.

Customer Reviews

Slightly Disappointing4
This DVD was long awaited in our household--especially by me, so that I could watch the apparent unseen footage of the judges and the contestants. However, I was slightly disappointed overall. This is because when I watched the DVD, and most of the footage was from the TV series shown on ITV 1. I find that this was unsatisfactory because the spiel on the DVD suggested that there were auditions and clips we had not seen on either X factor or Xtra Factor.
Overall, it is a good DVD for an X Factor fan, the format is clever and the DVD is overall very well put together.

very good entertainment4
From the scary eyed cook " So I hope I can cook you up something today" to the saracophagal toothless widow "I'm 47"(Tuttenkhamun actually looks better today!!) and the look on the faces of the panel, this DVD is a barrel of laughs. Living abroad where many of the guests we entertain are non English speakers, this kind of entertainment bridges the language barrier, always guaranteeing rip roaring fun for all.
Eagerly awaiting more of the same.

Your kidding Right?3
Having spent more hours than I care to count forced to suffer the soul destroying, IQ sapping and uniquely British weekend evenings we all love, I believed that nothing could top my sense of despair. So imagine my surprise when, after the dread of discovering that this cheap alternative to proper drama had been made into a DVD, my desire to weep was replaced by that perverse curiosity one gets from driving past a road crash.

I have had an epiphany. The laughing gnomes were particularly good and what topped off my experience was the all pervading sense of monkeys. Indeed as the offering rose to a crescendo of bile I was swept away by the emotionally charged tears of so many lost souls. I do hope the series does not start to lose its originality and get repetitive.

Overall Awe inspiring to the point of genuine revelation - Especially that Simon thingy bloke. Or was that in Britain's Got Tea Towels? - Sorry I do get them mixed up. Cheerio.

Bon Jovi -Round And Round [DVD]

Bon Jovi -Round And Round [DVD] review

After a quarter-century rocking all over the world, selling out stadiums, topping charts and giving music some of its greatest hands-in-the-air moments, Bon Jovi are still sounding as dynamic as they ever did and still performing gigs that quite simply amaze all those in attendance. Having stayed firmly in the hearts and minds of their fans since they exploded onto the scene with Slippery When Wet , they also remain true to their blue-collar roots in New Jersey despite the temptations of the rock n roll lifestyle. And in never attempting to keep pace with the whims of fashion, they have equally, never had reason to fall foul of that shallow grave. Instead they continue to make the music they want to make which just happens to delight millions of the others across the globe. Bon Jovi Round and Round is a quite stunning documentary film telling the entire story of Bon Jovi. Featuring a wealth of interview material with the band themselves, as well as rare archive footage, exclusive contributions from those closest to the group, location shoots, seldom seen photographs and a host of other features, this programme is an essential addition to any Bon Jovi fan s collection.

U2 - 2005 Vertigo - Live From Chicago [DVD]

U2 - 2005 Vertigo - Live From Chicago [DVD]

Filmed at the United Center Chicago on 9th and 10th May 2005, the Vertigo 2005 DVD brings the Vertigo tour experience to the small screen. The Deluxe DVD spans two discs: the full live show, directed by Hamish Hamilton - director of both U2's previous million selling live DVDs - plus an additional disc of bonus material including Beyond The Tour, an intimate behind the scenes documentary and startling 'surveillance cuts' of the Chicago show. Filmed using four remotely controlled black and white infra-red surveillance cameras, the footage offers a totally different perspective on the show.

Nice, but now I really want the San Siro DVD...4
Having been blown away by the live show in Amsterdam (3) my expectations for this DVD were very high, and I now, after just watching it (unlike many other 'reviewers'), I must admit I'm a little bit dissapointed...

A large part of that dissapointment is ofcourse my high expectations, but somehow it just isn't as gripping as most of the other DVD/Videos (especially Slane Castle) and definately not as mind-blowing as the 'real deal'. Especially the first half of the DVD didn't glue me to the couch like the others did.

I've thought very hard about it, but I think this mainly caused by the fact that:

1. I've seen the real thing, the stadium show with 50.000 people going absolutely crazy, an experience which is one of my personal high points in life, so, okay, kinda hard to beat :)
2. Lots of critical moments in the (fantastic!) light/videoshow and reactions of the crowd (where is the crowd in this DVD anyway?) are missed due to the use (IMHO) too much close-ups of the band.
3. Something's up with the mix of the sound. It's kind of vague and especially Larry's drumkit seems rather unbalanced, for example the bassdrum doesn't seem to pack any real punch.
4. It's an 'early' show in the first leg of the tour, so there still some rough edges on all aspects of the production.

That said, it's still U2, lots of new/rarely video-ed songs, the band's great as usual (altough Bono's voice seems to come and go, and Edge makes a few little mistakes, but hey, that's usual aswell :)) and the video quality is also excellent, so still great stuff for the fans, but if I wanted to show an 'outsider' what U2 is all about I'd pick Slane Castle anytime.

But I must admit I like the really big stadium shows (think: Popmart) better, so this DVD probably suits the fans of the more intimate shows better.

Finally, the extra disk on the 'deluxe edition' isn't really worth the extra money IMHO, the 'documentary' is mainly a lot of soundbites from fans (contains a great hilarious of Vertigo sung by fans though!) and crew. Not a lot from the band, and definately not enough from the production of the show. Willy's security cam shots are nice, but nothing more than that. Cannot comment on the DVD rom features though as I haven't seen 'm yet. Would get the regular version if you're on a budget or not a die-hard fan.

Now the wait for San Siro starts, hopefully Hamish Hamilton paid some attention to the show and the audience this time, willy and those crazy italians deserve it!

Anyway, (you will) have fun!

My 5 cents.

Concert For The Americas [DVD]

Concert For The Americas [DVD] review

Customer Reviews

Sinatra sings for the Americas... the entire world listens5
Maybe the best Sinatra concert released in DVD format.
If you've seen him in 1971 in the SINATRA IN CONCERT release and get impressed, and then the breathtaking MAIN EVENT from his 1974 Ne York's Madison Square Garden, and even if you had the chance to enjoy the amazing show given at the Budokan Arena in Tokio,
Japan,in 1985(SINATRA IN JAPAN,another dvd release),then chek out thes new item.Don't let the dates fool you. It's 1982,Frank is 66 years old but sings and swings like in the legendary Capitol days...even better. His voice sounds strong and sure,he travels along a wonderful career of forty years filled with marvellous melodies and huge worldwide hits. He's in an excellent mood and jokes constantly with the audience. The sound of the Buddy Rich orchestra, conducted by Vincent Falcone Jr.-an usual collaboration of the Sinatra stuff in those years is jazzy and fresh. There are no strings, but you really don't mind, except in tracks like George Harrison's SOMETHING...the amazing Nelson Riddle arrangement made for the 1979 TRILOGY album is definitive and undisputable.Buddy himself takes an excitin ten-minutes segment to demonstrate his artistry with the drums. At the end of his solo,a version of the WEST SIDE STORY theme THE JET SONG,you can hardly breathe!!
Another memorable segment comes when The Chairman of The Board and the incredible guitarist Tony Mattola join to do versions of SEND IN THE CLOWNS and QUIET NIGHTS OF QUIET STARS.What a magical, hypnotizing moment.
A must not only for a true Sinatra fan,but for any music fan

A CLASSIC PERFORMANCE REMASTERED BEAUTIFULLY!5
For many years, we Sinatrphiles have enjoyed this concert. First as a TV special, then as a bootleg video, then an obscure "official" VHS stereo video, and (in some countries) finally as an "official" DVD release. This latest edition is much clearer and cleaner in appearance and the sound is greatly improved over the stereo VHS version. It's a winner all-the-way! Buddy Rich's solo on his band's famous "West Side Story Medley" is one for the ages.

P.S. I am so glad they left in Mr. S's fine "off-mike" comment to Vinnie Falcone about how much he loved singing "Strangers in the Night"!!!! :O

Sinatra-Comcert For The Americas5
Vintage Sinatra. Sinatra at the top of his game, singing his songs as only he can. The man was in a great mood and this was reflected in his performance. The sound on the DVD was fabulous. This dvd is probably one of the best live performances of Sinatra available to the public.

Rosas - Rosas Danst Rosas [DVD]

Rosas - Rosas Danst Rosas [DVD] review

Customer Reviews

Rosas Danst Rosas5
This piece is engaging on so many levels that it can captivate a wide audience including those with little dance experience or knowledge. It is an opportunity to see how a simple phrase of movement can build over time through a variety of techniques such as adding a new gesture, changing the direction of the phrase etc. The dancers show intense commitment to the movement and their physicality is breathtaking. There is a strong focus on movement dynamics (for all those fans of Laban and Choreutics) and this is beautifully complemented by the editing and varied use of different camera shots. The choreographer and film director have a long and successful history working together and this is evidenced throughout this production.
For all Britney fans, check out the group section based around sitting on chairs where a movement phrase builds and dancers 'throw' sections of material back and forth, directions changing, breathe and movement in unison. It's intense and wonderfully rewarding to watch.

Dance, for the Minimalist5
That such a small range of gesture and movement could produce dance of such an absorbing quality is fascinting, intriguing, wonderful. Steve Riechs music and Thierry De May direction really draw the best out of Anna Teresa De Keersmaekers powerful choreography. Buy De Keersmaekers earlier video FASE with this one, together they're twin pearls.

The Sweet - Sweet - The Very Best Of Sweet [DVD]

The Sweet - Sweet - The Very Best Of Sweet [DVD]

A collection of the glam-rock hits. Tracklist includes: 'Ballroom Blitz', 'Teenage Rampage', 'Wigwam Bam', and 'Blockbuster'. Also includes interviews and rare film footage.

Customer Reviews

Just slightly missing something.....4
This DVD is ok. There IS a lot of room for improvement, but as it's really the only Sweet DVD out there at the moment, it will have to do.
Out of the tracks that are listed on the DVD cover, these are the only ones that are full clips/performances:

"Co-Co"
"Poppa Joe"
"Hell Raiser"
"The Ballroom Blitz"
"Teenage Rampage"
"The Six Teens"
"Turn It Down"
"Fox on the Run"
"Action"

there are other tracks, but if you're really wanting decent performances of these, you'll be disappointed:

"Funny, Funny" (about 30sec)
"Little Willy" (features for about 10sec!!)
"Wig Wam Bam" (again, about 30sec)
"Blockbuster!" (another short performance, although it's been performed this way)
"Love is Like Oxygen" (chopped up TOTP performance)

There are thre people interviewed throughout this DVD; Nicky Chinn, Andy Scott and Phil Wainman. All of them give a lot of insight to the band and really make this dvd worth buying.

All i can say is that a proper dvd made up of rare TV performances and ALL of their promos is desperately needed.

Kings Of Leon - Live At The O2 - London, England [Blu-ray] [2009]

Kings Of Leon - Live At The O2 - London, England [Blu-ray] [2009]

DVD Description

Kings of Leon: Live At The O2 London, England, captures, up-close and personal, the band performing in front of 18,000 adoring fans on one of a three-night stint in June 2009 in London. These shows were some of the biggest of the band’s career in the country that was the first to embrace them, and the symbolism and excitement is palpable. As those who have attended the band’s shows can attest, Kings of Leon go out of their way to have great sound, unusual for the arenas they play in. Produced by Emer Patten and directed by Nick Wickham, Kings of Leon: Live At The O2 London, England, the live sound was mixed by Brent Rawlings while the DVD sound was mixed by Jacquire King and Vance Powell.

Synopsis
Alternative rock outfit Kings Of Leon performs live at the O2 Arena in London, England. Tracks include: 'Notion', 'Be somebody', 'Taper Jean Girl', 'My Party', 'Molly Chambers', 'Red Morning Light', 'Fans', 'California Waiting', 'Milk', 'Sex On Fire' and many more.

Superb-best band in the world at the moment5
A phenomenal band, playing a phenomenal gig! I actually went to the Manchester gig and I have never come out of a gig so awed and blown away. The DVD is a great recording with perfect sound and vision. I highly recommend.

BEST GIG EVER5
I was actually there - having been two weeks previously too! This was the best gig that I have ever seen and I could not fault them at all. Everything for me was perfection. I said on the night that I wished my life could be on a loop and now it can be. In my opinion an excellent DVD - sound quality and visually. If you have a spare tenner and want to be blown away then buy this.

Manic Street Preachers - Louder Than War

Manic Street Preachers - Louder Than War [DVD] [2001]

On February 17, 2001, Manic Street Preachers performed at the Karl Marx Theater in Havana as a promotional launch for their KNOW YOUR ENEMY album. LOUDER THAN WAR is a record of that eventful day, both on stage and behind the scenes. The hour-long set includes the hit singles "Motorcycle Emptyness," "Ocean Spray," and "Let Robeson Sing" among others. An accompanying documentary features the band's arrival in Cuba, their meeting with Fidel Castro, a press conference, and muchmore.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
A month before the release of their sixth album in early 2001, the Manic Street Preachers organised a one-off gig in Cuba. Louder than War contains footage of the entire concert (famously attended by President Fidel Castro), as well as the group's caper around the island. The country was chosen by the Manics because of Cuba's anti-American stance, a position that band members supported and have drawn upon in their material. Superbly produced and edited, the end result however fails to represent the group's visit and views in a positive light. Reading between the lines, it's obvious that their trip was just as much a challenge to Americanisation as Wham's 1985 tour of China. The band verbally acknowledge that communism has always been openly romanticised, however they fail to recognise the extent to which they have done the same with this "promotional" concert, and the subsequent merchandising and PR opportunities. Putting ideological issues aside, the disc provides further evidence of the Manics' flair for live performance. The dulled colours of the visual material create a drab, if somewhat oppressive atmosphere, but add much needed authenticity to the proceedings. The unreleased tour diary sets the scene more comprehensively than the previously broadcast Cuba documentary, which is also contained on this disc. This is a must for all Manics fans, as well as those wanting a non-guidebook (if somewhat romanticised) view of modern-day, urban Cuba.

including among them the most notorious at Bourne End (1945), Lewisham (1957), South
Croydon (1947), Goswick (1947), Hither Green (1967), Castlecary (1937) and Darlington
(1928).

multiple crash at Harrow And Wealdstone in 1952 which features much rare footage
including previously unseen film rushes.
Throughout, British Steam Railway Disasters investigates the common causes of railway
accidents with a view to the lessons learnt from :-
Driver Error, Excessive Speed, Poor Visibility In Fog, Signals Passed At Danger, Signalling
Errors, Road Vehicle Collisions, Equipment Failure, Rolling Stock Instability and Track
Defects.

Customer Reviews

An excellent historical record5
For those with an interest in the subject matter, British Steam Railway Disasters is an excellent historical record of 55 of the major railway accidents which occurred between 1913 and 1967. It gathers together professionally shot, restored original black and white archive material, much of which has remained unseen since the events were first reported. Recovered from a variety of TV and cinema news-reel vaults, the programme features both line-side and aerial shots taken as each incident is first being reported, as the extent of the accident becomes known, and also later as the clearance crews deal with the clean-up operation. Some events are briefly covered, and some in greater depth depending upon the amount of archive material available, with some also accompanied by the original reported commentary and interviews with both observers and victims of the incidents recorded at the time. This is further complimented with a modern day commentary/synopsis of each incident to explain the known causes and facts of the accidents later discovered by the inquiries. The material is grouped into accidents caused through 9 main causes: Driver error, excessive speed, poor visibility in fog, signals passed at danger, signalling errors, road vehicle collisions, equipment failure, rolling stock instability, and track defects. Excellent picture and audio quality, thoughtfully compiled and produced - highly recommended.
Region 0. Running time 79 minutes. Picture aspect 1.33:1. Stereo Dolby Digital sound.

Shirley Bassey - Divas Are Forever [DVD]

Shirley Bassey - Divas Are Forever [DVD]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Shirley Bassey is show business royalty and Divas Are Forever is an inspired attempt to create a documentary around a concert given during the Diamond Awards Festival in Belgium. The setting is perfect, with the Dame rising supremely above the innate vulgarity of the event. You can cut straight to the songs if you want, and you won't be disappointed: all her hits are here, from "Goldfinger" to "Big Spender". The voice is clearly one of the great instruments of popular music. She seems to regret being pigeonholed as "Bassey the belter", but her vocal chords weren't built for small rooms or smoky nightclubs. Each number is a high-octane emotional set piece in which she always stops just short of travestying her own inimitable style. The real interest, though, lies in the glimpses of the star's life on the road. There are some splendidly sticky moments that leave her flunkies dodging the barbs. The tantrum she throws during the video shoot with the Propellerheads for "History Repeating" is a gem. And the negotiations for her to be presented with a jewel as the "surprise" climax to her concert leave you with no doubt that this diva knows her own worth. --Piers Ford

Synopsis
Shirley Bassey performs live in Antwerp at the Diamond Awards Festival. The tracklist includes: 'Goldfinger', 'Diamonds Are Forever', 'Kiss Me Honey, Honey', 'New York, New York', 'Big Spender', 'Lady Is A Tramp', 'Something', 'I Who Have Nothing', 'This Is My Life', 'I Wish You Love' and 'Never, Never, Never'. The programme also features behind-the-scenes film footage and interviews with the star.

Customer Reviews

Our Greatest Female Singer!5
A better title for this DVD should have been Shirley Bassey - Living Legend. Why it had to be Divas Are Forever I don't know. What you are witnessing in this film is one of the most stunning and exciting performers of all time. Her ability to express the emotions of a lyric are incredible and powerful, she sings how you feel and the result is spellbinding. I can't think of another person living on this planet that can do this as well, and I've been around for a while! As for this DVD in particular, it's a pity the camera shots were not closer to her on the stage. The dinner party scene was nonsense and should have been cut, but apart from this small slip up it is a fantastic DVD to get if you are a great fan or just an admirer. It sounds superb on DVD, and I only wish there were more songs to hear. The start menu is great as you can select the songs and go straight to your favourite. I recommend anyone to purchase this and witness the incomparable Shirley Bassey, I love her!!

Not her best interpretations3
Before I go into my opinion: the title of this dvd and the pictures on the front and back sleeve have NOTHING to do with the performance on the disc which was recorded at the Diamonds Awards Concert in Antwerp in 1997. It is NOT the ITV show "An Audience With Shirley Bassey", whence the cover picture was taken from.
She has horrible short red hair and a white gown, a fitted top and loose see-through bits made to look like a long skirt, and for the last two bumbers she wears a cheap-looking white fur coat with a silver interior.

After seeing many many live videos on utube by our Dame, this is one of the less intriguing of them all. I found her interpretations to be not the best at all. It's like she was putting the oomph on the last or second-to-last letters/syllables of the sentences, which is personally, annoying, especially when the songs as they are meant to be sung and usually performed by her are exectuted differently. It can be a breath of fresh air if she does it to one or two songs, but she's doing it too often here. She does smile and kids around a lot which is very nice, and totally professional considering the bigger part of the front audience are puppets with no expressions and clap with a bpm of 5. Kudos to her for that.
However, it failed to entertain me as the websurfing has until now, this being my first full-length concert watched on a tv screen and with hifi sound. Hopefully some better performances have been or will be released.

I was happy to see that she closed the show with I AM WHAT I AM which is not listed on the setlist on the box (but then again pretty much all of the sleeve info is wrong).

The concert itself is about an hour long and is broken into bits with some sort of making of in between a couple of songs, and interviews which are nice.

gets better with age5
just like a good wine our shirl gets better with age. her live dvds are much better than her c.ds as a live audience seems to bring out the best of her. this dvd is a must for all dame shirley fans.

AC/DC - No Bull: The Directors Cut [DVD] [1996]

Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
Australian hard rockers AC/DC were one of the hugest arena bands of the 1970's. This two-hour long concert video features the Aussie quintet rocking out to 22 of their songs. Filmed live on July 19, 1996 at the Plaza De Toro De Las Ventas (a remarkable space usually designated for bull fights), this footage showcases Angus Young at his sleazy best!

Live In Manila [DVD] review

The Journey goes on.5
I sat down to watch this thinking it looked cheap considering fact that it comes on 2 DVD5 discs but within five minutes I was captured (no pun intended).this band seem to get better year by year. With plenty classic journey songs & 7 new tracks from the revelation CD this is two & a half hours of high quality music,I was also blown away by the voice of drummer Deen Castronovo(almost as good as Steve Perry,I kid you not). The only downside is this concert was shot in high definition so where is the blu-ray?

What a voice5
I was not familiar with Journey in their hey day years ago and only recently started to take an interest in their music. After listening to some you tube clips I decided to buy this DVD. I am so glad I did as it is truly wonderful. Arnel Pineda has a magnificent voice and does justice to the great songs which were written by the band members. His energy on stage is endless and his voice never faltered. The rapport between the band members is great. This DVD is a must have.

Arnel is Great!4
This live concert DVD is superb. New lead singer Arnel Pineda is full of energy and has a great voice - close your eyes and it could be Steve Perry. Good to see drummer Deen Castronovo sing a few songs too - also excellect Jouney style vocals. My only quibble is why is this on 2 Discs? It is 2hr 25min in total with no bonus material. It breaks the continuity of the concert having to change discs half way through! There are plenty of longer movies on a single disc so why they had to do this I do not know. But I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless!

Synopsis
In 2006 grunge legends Pearl Jam undertook a short, five-date Italian tour, and brought filmmaker Danny Clinch along with them to document the proceedings. The resulting film showcases Pearl Jam's considerable prowess in the live arena and also offers a glimpse at the men behind the music, with candid backstage footage and interviews with the band members all included.

"Barn Stormin"4
For the price this is an excellent DVD for Jerry Lee fans. The killer is at his best on the piano belting out all the favourites we love to hear, however, the guests he has joining him on stage, do not appear until near the end and do very little to add to the performance. The 4 star rating is purely on the killers performance, but,as a foot-tapping show to enjoy it is very good.It looks like to me there is a part of the show missing i.e. guests doing individual performances.Still, over-all for less than a fiver, not bad.

Top class performance.5
Great DVD from start to finish. It's a shame that the sound quality doesn't really comply to today's standard. You don't get any noise, but than you don't get the best frequency scale with this recording. Tracks performed are superb, and if you like or want to find out what rock'n'roll is about, this DVD is the definite answer.
